After moving to Chicago Illinois she began studying the art of performing with The Second City Training Center in the year 2009. Tolman gained fame during 2014 when Tolman appeared on FX's Fargo. Fargo was based on the Coen Brothers' film with the same title. It starred Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman as well as Bob Odenkirk. Tolman has received praises for her performance in the part of Minnesota Police Officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair declared that Tolman has "calmly assuredly stolen the entire production". The show premiered in September 2019, but it was pulled after just one season ending on May 21, 2020. The actress was also an actor on NBC's Good Girls. In 2021, she acted as Alma Filcott on the second season of Why Women Kill and Natalie Green, The Facts of Life, of Live in Front of a Studio Audience the third edition.
